What We'll Be Covering: Hosting a Simple Gender Reveal

There are multiple aspects of a gender reveal, and we're going to take you through them all.

Here's a quick overview of what we'll be covering:

  1. Invitations: Who and how many?
  2. Decorations
  3. Food and drink
  4. Activities
  5. The big reveal

Think of us as your personal online party planners!

Step 1: Creating Your Gender Reveal Invitations

Assuming your simple, at-home gender reveal will have minimal guests, are invitations actually necessary?

If the answer is no, then just texting or emailing your family and friends is the ultimate 'simple' suggestion. Time, date, place, done.

But if the answer is yes, instead of having physical invitations made, which can sometimes be costly, why not design a document and email it out? That way, your guests will get a sense of your theme and get into the celebratory spirit before they've even walked through the door.

There are hundreds of templates available online. Canva can be useful, and it's free to use.

How Many People Should I Invite?

This depends on the size of your home and how many people you're willing to cater for. Unlike baby showers, traditionally for women, men and children can also be invited to gender reveals, so that's something to consider.

The bottom line, there is no right or wrong answer.

Who Should I Invite?

Again, there is no right or wrong answer. You should select people to invite based on who you want to share your day and celebrate with.

(Hosting a small, at-home gender reveal can also be an excuse not to invite someone...Just a thought.)

Step 2: Home Gender Reveal Decorations

Large balloon arches and hoops are trending at the moment. They can look amazing at a party and are great pieces to get your Instagram pictures in front of.

However, due to their size, they’re probably more suitable for a garden party.

If the weather isn't on your side or you don't have the space to have the gender reveal party in your garden, you could perhaps make a smaller balloon display yourself. All you need is a string, balloons, glue dots, and tape.

While you're keeping things simple, you probably don't want to mess around with lots of small decorations. An easy way to get around this is by creating a table display.

So here are our simple gender reveal table ideas:

  • Pampas grass centrepieces. Pampas grass is everywhere at the moment, and it looks great as a decoration. You can purchase it in multiple colours, so it's versatile for any theme.
  • Table runners are great for helping you decide where to place your table decorations, and again, you can get one in the colour of your theme.
  • Napkins, whether made of material or paper, can add dimension to your table display. If you're feeling fancy, you could even try folding them into different shapes to be placed on your guests' plates.
  • Confetti. No party is complete without confetti. Try spreading some around the centre of your table for a pop of shine and colour.
  • Plates and cutlery should be chosen based on your theme. To keep it simple, you can use the real thing, but disposables look just as good.

Simple Gender Reveal Themes

Of course, there are infinite themes to choose from when party planning, but to keep things easy, here's a list of three.

Blue & Pink

Neutrals & Teddy Bears

Purple & Green

Blue and pink are the most obvious options, they are timeless and sweet if the colours are not overpowering.

As we said, keeping it to a balloon piece and table display would help you keep things simple and not go over the top with the blue and pink.

Neutrals and teddy bears are new to the gender reveal scene, and everyone seems to love it.

Khloe Kardashian threw best friend Malika Haqq a baby shower in the same theme, and it looked clean and elegant.

Using neutrals at a gender reveal can be a great idea if your actual reveal includes blue or pink, as it can really make the colour stand out.

Purple and green tones can be an alternative to blue and pink if you don't want to go down the traditional route.

The earthy tones create a unique gender reveal that is highly aesthetically pleasing.

Step 3: Food & Drink Ideas for Your Home Gender Reveal

Figuring out what to serve your guests at your gender reveal can be somewhat stressful, but it definitely doesn't need to be. The important thing here is to think about what you want, because pleasing everyone sometimes isn't possible.

The simplest thing to organise is a buffet. Whether you buy party food from M&S, make it yourself, or order it in, there should be something for everyone.

Recently, charcuterie boards have taken over TikTok, and people seem to be choosing these massive grazing boards for their events – they do look stunning. You can either order one from a professional or make one yourself.

For drinks, while we're keeping it simple, all you need is a mocktail (serve in a Kilner jar with chopped fruits inside), water, and a tea and coffee station.

If you want to make it even simpler, tell your guests it BYO.

Step 4: Simple Gender Reveal Activities

The day wouldn't be complete without a few gender reveal activities, but it doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are a few simple recommendations that take little time and effort:

  • Baby prediction games involve a small amount of prep. All you need is a sheet of paper for each guest to predict as many things about your new arrival as possible. The winner won't be announced until after the birth, but it's still a cute gender reveal activity.
  • Baby charades require zero prep and can be a funny, light game for your family and friends to get involved in. Like normal charades, you have to pick something to describe without using words or sounds, but it must be baby-related. For example, changing table, bedside crib, or milk.
  • Guess the celebrity baby. Google a list of celebrities and find images of what they looked like as babies. Share these images with your guests and have them guess who they think it is. The person with the most correct answers wins. Warning: This gets competitive.

Step 5: The Big Gender Reveal

Now, for what you and your guests will be waiting for, the ultimate surprise

There are hundreds (and we mean hundreds) of ways to reveal the gender of your new arrival, but we've narrowed it down to just three simple ways.

#1 Gender Reveal Cakes

Gender reveal cakes are a popular choice for parents because they're multipurpose. They reveal the gender (usually white on the outside and pink or blue on the inside), but guests can also take a slice home after the party.

If you're feeling extra Instagramable, use wine or champagne glasses to cut the cake with your partner and have someone film the special moment.

#2 Gender Reveal Balloons

Gender reveal balloons are a good way to insight anticipation into you and the guests.

After a countdown from your loved ones, you and your partner will pop a large balloon to reveal pink or blue confetti. Make sure you get someone to take some pictures for the action shot!

#3 Gender Reveal Party Poppers

Gender reveal party poppers are a lovely way to include all your guests in the reveal.

Give each person a party popper and count down to simultaneously pull the sting to reveal blue or pink streamers.

Simple Gender Reveal Ideas: Final Thoughts & Reminders

By now, you should be able to picture your at-home gender reveal in your head, and if you haven't, we hope you have some inspiration and ideas to plan your own.

Remember, the most important thing is to have fun with it and make it a memorable moment for you and your loved ones.

Here are some final reminders:

  • Remember, it's your day. Do what makes you happy, and make it as stress-free as possible.
  • You don't need an over-the-top gender reveal to make it special. Sometimes more intimate reveals are nice.
  • You don't need to spend a fortune. Test your DIY skills and see what you can do!
